Dear folks,

I praise the Lord today [Thursday, Nov.30] that Jenny, Helaine [ my youngest daughte] and I , suffered no bodily harm in a road accident. This morning I drove Helaine to school as usual, with Jenny also on board to be driven to skytrain station afterwards. We were going downhill on Chilko Drive [a main road close to my home] , which was clear of snow but very wet owing to the melted snow which was all along the road.. We had passed 2 down-slope bends safely without a sweat as usual. However, when coming into the 3rd down-sloping bend I suddenly felt that the steering became loose. I was only driving at the usual speed as in a usual rainy day, around 55 kph or so, which I had done for over 5 years on this bend. In a split second, I tried to steer my Camry back into the condition of being controlled, but then only found that the car was completely out of my command. It hit the right curb in a fast move that I thought I was driving an aircraft ! it eventually shot over the curb and downhill towards some bushes on the field and finally stopped by a fence made of iron-net and poles. The whole scene was only about 3 seconds long ! I thank God that :

1. nobody in my car had any bodily harm---no twisting of the neck, nor knocking of the head on a hard surface, nor any glass broken !

2. no other person got involved. If there had been any other car on the road, we would be lying in the hospital right now ! For sure, I would not be sitting at my desk and writing this to you now.

3. many people , at least 6 or 7 cars, stopped by and asked if we needed any help !

For many years, I had not been asked in such a sympathetic, caring way [ the last accident I had was about 20 years ago in a big, snowy day. I was unscathed as it was a minor collision of others’ fault]. It really is comforting to have encountered Canadians who are caring about their “NEIGHBOURS” still. One lady drove Helaine to school while we waited for a tow-truck to pull our Camry back onto the road ! Then one man drove Jenny and I to pick up my Alero so I could drive Jenny to the skytrain station. By the way, they were Caucasians. 4. I could experience the need to humble myself after a record of 20 years without any road accident. Last night, I safely drove back home after a prayer meeting when the roads were quite slippery with lots of snow. Yet, this morning I fully acknowledged that DEATH could be just around the corner when I thought I was having my car under my control. My car this morning missed hitting , by a foot away, a concrete buffer block while dashing into the bushes ! While I was waiting for the tow-truck to come, I watched 2 other cars seemingly skidded somewhat at where I lost control, and narrowly avoided accidents like mine. I deeply understood the idiom “Familiarity breeds contempt”. I thought I had driven through this bend for over 5 years, in snow and in rain. “ NO BIG DEAL. Chilko Dr. was clearly safe. This morning should have been NO SWEAT for me.” Such thought was on my mind before the accident took place. Well, after all this, Today was a great day. Great in the sense that I experienced God’s protection, fellow Canadians' care, and gained a bit of wisdom from such an accident.

Praise Him In His Grace,

Wayne Lo
